Carrier extraction circuit
Feedback loop extracts demodulated reference signals from IF input and feeds signal back to demodulator. Since reference signal is extracted directly from carrier, no separate reference need be transmitted. Circuit obtains coherent carrier from balanced or unbalanced four-phase signal of varying characteristics
Local field effect as a function of pulse duration
In this note we give semiclassical consideration of the role of pulse
duration in observation of local field effects in the regime of optical
switching. We show that the main parameter governing local field influence is
the ratio of peak Rabi frequency corresponding to medium inversion and Lorentz
frequency of the medium. To obtain significant local field effect, this
parameter should be near unity that is valid only for long enough pulses. We
also discuss the role of relaxation and pulse shape in this processes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Do trophic subsidies affect the outcome of introductions of a non-native freshwater fish?
Understanding how environmental variables and human disturbances influence the outcomes of introductions of non-native freshwater fish is integral to their risk management. This can be complex in freshwater ecosystems that receive subsidies that increase food availability, as these may influence the outcome of introductions through promoting the survival, reproduction and establishment of the introduced propagules through increasing their access to food resources. We determined how natural and/or artificial trophic subsidies affected the reproduction and establishment of the introduced topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) in replicated pond mesocosms. The mesocosms all started with eight mature fish and were run for 100 days during their reproductive season. The subsidies consisted of natural terrestrial prey and/or fishmeal pellets (a common trophic subsidy that can be significant in systems that are used as sport fisheries or for aquaculture). After 100 days, fish in the natural subsidy ponds showed minimal growth and very low reproductive output. Analysis of δC and δN indicated that their progeny, 0+ fish produced in the ponds, exploited the terrestrial prey. By contrast, in ponds where pellets were added, mineral nutrient availability and primary production were significantly increased, and the mature fish fed mainly on the aquatic resources. The increased productivity of the ponds significantly increased fish growth and fitness, resulting in high numbers of 0+ individuals that did feed on the pellets. Thus, subsidies that can increase both primary production and food resources (such as pelletised fishmeal) can significantly influence the ability of colonists to establish a population rapidly. Management efforts to minimise the risk of introductions should thus consider the role of these types of allochthonous subsidies. © 2013 The Authors. The Separation of Powers: Does Public Opinion Matter to the Supreme Court?
The Supreme Court is an institution much revered in American political culture. This study will examine the role of that public support in the decision making of Supreme Court justices in the United States. I will go about assessing this first by measuring the level of public support for the Supreme Court as measured by the General Social Survey (GSS) and cross-tabulating it with data on the frequency of legislation invalidation. Ultimately, I show that the Supreme Court does in fact respond to public opinion, using public support as a power base to strike down a greater number of federal laws. In other words, the Supreme Court is more likely to invalidate a law when it is more popular than the incumbent legislature. My results indicate that there is, in fact, a positive and significant correlation in the data that supports our hypothesis

M.A. University of Missouri 1909Photographs pasted in.Typescript.The content and environment of Japanese life are so totally different from those of American life that it may not be amiss if we consider first some of the difficulties to be met with in any sound and unbiased discussion of the life of the common people. It is unsafe to take anything for granted or to draw general conclusions. One therefore in writing upon any phase of Japanese life must either depend upon his own observations, and these must extend over many years to be of any value; or be able to cull from the great mass of written material the few kernels of truth that it contains. One soon learns, however, how very difficult, in fact how nearly impossible, it is for a westerner to gain first-hand information of any worth or accuracy in the study of social conditions in Japan; and likewise how few really valuable things have been written along the lines which are here undertaken. I have consulted practically everything available in English bearing in any way upon the different phases of the life of the common people in the smaller communities, and have endeavored to choose from this the things that give a notion of what that life really is; and have drawn from my own experience of a residence of three years in Japan. The more, however, that I think of the Japanese as they are the more impossible it seems to present a picture that will give any adequate conception of the reality. And yet the question of the village life "is a most important one, for it is in the villages that survive the most numerous traces of the past. In the towns the old landmarks are being rapidly obliterated"
Exploration for volcanogenic sulphide mineralisation at Benglog, north Wales
Exploration for volcanogenic sulphide mineralisation
around Benglog is one of three investigations
designed to assess the metallogenic potential
of the Ordovician Aran Volcanic Group.
Detailed geological mapping in the Benglog
area enabled an interpretation of the volcanic
environment, critical to such an assessment, to be
made. The eruptive rocks are acid and basic in
composition; the acid rocks are mostly ash-flow
tuffs derived from outside the area, whereas the
basic rocks have a local derivation. They are all
interbedded with dark grey or black silty mudstone
and were probably erupted in a submarine
environment. Contemporaneous dolerite sills were
intruded into wet sediment.
This environment was suitable for volcanogenic
exhalative sulphide deposits to form and indications
of a metallogenic horizon were found at the top
of the Y Fron Formation in the form of abundant
pyrite, minor pyrrhotite and minor base metal
enrichment.
Soil samples, analysed for copper, lead and
zinc, were collected and geophysical surveys were
carried out along eleven east-west trending traverse
lines 300 m apart across the volcanic succession.
Indications were found of minor vein mineralisation
at dolerite intrusion margins and locally along
faults. Very high chargeability and low resistivity
anomalies over mudstones did not spatially
coincide with geochemical anomalies in soil, but
the secondary redistribution of metals in soils and
variable thickness of overburden precluded
confident interpretation of the source of many
soil anomalies. Geochemical drainage data, in
conjunction with rock analyses, show strong
barium enrichment in mudstones which could be
volcanogenic in origin but related to two separate
eruptive episodes.
The findings of the survey were inconclusive.
An environment suitable for the formation of
volcanogenic exhalative sulphide deposits was
established, but the geochemical and geophysical
surveys located only minor vein mineralisation and
tenuous indications of other styles of mineralisation.
Recommendations are made for further work
Astrometric Telescope Facility isolation and pointing study
The Astrometric Telescope Facility (ATF), an optical telescope designed to detect extrasolar planetary systems, is scheduled to be a major user of the Space Station's Payload Pointing System (PPS). However, because the ATF has such a stringent pointing stability specification and requires + or - 180 deg roll about its line of sight, mechanisms to enhance the basic PPS capability are required. The ATF pointing performance achievable by the addition of a magnetic isolation and pointing system (MIPS) between the PPS upper gimbal and the ATF, and separately, by the addition of a passive isolation system between the Space Station and the PPS base was investigated. The candidate MIPS can meet the ATF requirements in the presence of a 0.01 g disturbance. It fits within the available annular region between the PPS and the ATF while meeting power and weight limitations and providing the required roll motion, payload data and power services. By contrast, the passive base isolator system must have an unrealistically low isolation bandwidth on all axes to meet ATF pointing requirements and does not provide roll about the line of sight
Technology adoption in accounting: The role of staff perceptions and organisational context
Technology is widely recognised to be revolutionising the accounting profession, allowing accountants to focus on professional skills and technical knowledge that deliver value for organisational success. Despite the known benefits, it is reported that accountants are not fully leveraging the potential value of certain technologies. To understand why, this study draws on the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) and investigates accounting professionals’ perceptions towards technology, and how these may influence adoption at work.
The study gathered online survey data from 585 accounting managers from organisations of varying size and in different sectors in Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. Qualitative data were thematically analysed, and quantitative data were analysed using both descriptive and multivariate techniques.
The study highlighted the pivotal role of staff perceptions on the importance and ease of using technology on uptake and successful usage. Findings emphasised important opportunities for organisations to educate accounting staff on the value of technology and optimise their confidence and skills through training and support initiatives, particularly smaller businesses. Marked differences in the orientation towards technology among Australia and Southeast Asian participants illuminate how national work culture and practice can influence technology adoption.
The study makes a practical contribution by advancing our understanding of the relative importance and value of certain technologies in different regions and organisation types in the accounting profession. It extends our theoretical understanding of the role of TAM’s core elements to the accounting context, exploring staff’s notions of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use from the manager’s perspective
